Hi First Graders! I really miss you guys. I know you are home with your families and are working hard and continuing to learn. I'm so proud of you and your hard work. I made some videos that I will be posting here.
Parents: Read this before to yourself and while video is playing.
Welcome to the Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park. I want you to visit the mountains in Big Bend and observe what you see.
Observe the roadrunners. What do you think they eat? Have you seen roadrunners around Marfa? Have you seen one catch something to eat?
Most of the plants you see in the film are also growing in Marfa. If you can, take a little walk and see if you can find some of them. In particular, look for prickly pears and observe what stage their flower cycle is in. Are they beginning to grow, are they blooming, are they turning to fruit? Are the fruits drying out? Don't touch them! The thorns and little glochids are sticky. They will hurt!
What eats prickly pears? Some of the animals that live in the Chisos mountains include bears, javelinas, mountain lions, and foxes. Which one ate those prickly pear pads?
Look at the leaves on the plants. Notice the shapes, colors, sizes, and textures. Look around in your backyard for different kinds of plants and leaves. If you are collecting leaves, watch out for plants with thorns!
Toward the end of the video you will hear the Mexican Jay.
Parents: You do not have to record student responses. Just enjoy visiting with your child and touring the mountains. This was filmed on the Lost Mine Trail in Big Bend. If kids have questions, please email them to me.
Thank you.
